Besides fieldwork and paper writing, I've been doing a bit of volunteering, teaching, and other such activities.
Two things that are noteworthy:
1) I won an Ecological Society of Australia Student Research Award! An excellent confidence booster, and also a great way to offset some of the ridiculously expensive science I have done and will do.
2) I have been volunteering with elementary school age kids through CSIRO's Scientists in Schools program. The program is basically a way to show kids how relevant science is in today's world, and also a way for them to see what life is like for scientists in a day-to-day sense. It's been a whole bucket of fun, plus it's a great way to feel like I'm helping those who come after me the same way that those who mentored and taught me helped me to find my passions. Naw, warm fuzzies.
My supervisor's partnership resulted in a story in the Sydney Morning Herald about the best way to keep a Christmas tree kicking- and they are preparing a manuscript to publish in a peer-reviewed journal! Excellent- helping kids learn what science is all about, plus a very practical outcome! Love it!
Until next time!
